SURAH AD DUHA Chapter: 93

This blog is part of a series of blogs based on my research and compilation of surahs of the Quran, in an effort to understand these surahs in an easy way. Today's effort is on Surah AD -DUHA Chapter: 93, hope going through it will be a learning journey for all of you. May Allah forgive any mistake, omission, or error on my part in its compilation (Aameen Summa Aameen).

Introduction:   Surah Ad-Duha is the 93rd surah (chapter) of the Quran, consisting of 11 verses (ayats) 165 letters, 40 words with 35 unique words without repetition, I Ruku. It’s revelation period is believed to be between 610- 615 AD. The term “Adh-Duha” translates to “The Morning Brightness” or “The Forenoon” in English. It is a Meccan surah, meaning it was revealed in Mecca before the migration of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to Medina. According to some narrations, Surah Ad-Duha, one of the Meccan Surahs, was revealed following a lengthy pause in revelation. The Holy Prophet (SAW) impatiently awaited its coming since the enemy had gotten irritating and began gossiping.

Background:

Surah Ad-Duha was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (saw) at a time when he had not received any revelation for six months. The Prophet (saw) was disturbed and depressed believing that Allah was displeased with him, had forgotten him. Surah says “Thy Guardian-Lord hath not forsaken thee, nor is He displeased. And verily the Hereafter will be better for thee than the present. And soon will thy Guardian-Lord give thee (that wherewith) thou shalt be well-pleased. Did He not find thee an orphan and give thee shelter (and care)?

Message of Surah:

The theme of Surah Ad-Duha and the reason for revelation is to comfort the prophet and to remove his anxiety and depression. To show the disbelievers that Allah has not forsaken the prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) as they claimed.

Major Issue, Divine Law and Guidance

Good news to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) that the later period will be better for him than the earlier.

Main teaching of Surah Duha

In summary, these are the four simple lessons we can learn from this short, yet powerful Surah: That there is hope, that Allah loves us, that better is coming, that Allah will give and reminding us of all He has given before.

Lessons from Surah Duha:

The Prophet (ﷺ) was depressed and thought that Allah had forgotten him, disapproved of him, and no longer wanted him to be a Prophet. These evil thoughts were alleviated and replaced with hope, positivism, and assurance that Allah is always there for him in Surah Ad-Duha. Lessons from surah Duha are following:

Be positive:

·         That’s what this Surah is all about, and that’s the most important lesson it teaches.

·         Optimism is a virtue we must uphold as Muslims.

·         Our ancestors did not intend for us to be a gloomy race.

·         Our lives should be filled with hope for Allah’s help and mercy.

·         Optimism and hope are essential ingredients in each activity we attempt.

·         If we are serious and the endeavor is helpful to the ummah, we must have faith that Allah will support us.

·         That mentality should be the driving force behind our efforts.

Be Thankful:

·         Allah reminded us of occasions in the past when He helped His Messenger so that we can keep our spirits up (peace be upon him).

·         Many times in the past, Allah has given us prosperity & turned around a difficult circumstance in our own lives.

·         Reminiscing about such occasions helps us remain hopeful that Allah will continue to provide for us in the future.

Be Generous:

·         A believer’s goals are not selfish and materialistic. Instead, our goals should revolve around The aspirations of believers who aren’t self-centered and selfish.

·         One method to strengthen the ummah is to become generous individuals, and our aims should focus on this.

·         The Muslim world thrives because of the generosity of its people.

·         Almighty Allah rewards those who give generously, and their wealth multiplies as a result.

·         The person who gets the charity is also blessed and now has some money to help him go forward in his own life.

·         Charity is a win/win scenario.

·         Everyone is a winner and a learner.

·         Believers should hope for this.

·         We must steer clear of ways and objectives that lead to materialism and self-centeredness.

·         When we focus on serving others, generosity is the first step.

Contribute to society:

·         A Muslim’s aim should be to raise & benefit the ummah, which necessitates having an ummah-centric attitude.

·         Putting people first should be the ultimate goal of every endeavor.

·         As long as our primary purpose is to help the ummah, Allah will reward us with Barakah for our work, companies, resources, and free time we devote to the cause.

·         As Muslims, we are all part of the same ummah, and we all wish to see this ummah return to its former glory.

Main Themes of Surah Al- Duha:

Surah serves as a poignant reminder of hope, patience, & the unwavering support of Allah even in times of difficulty. Muslims are encouraged to maintain trust in Allah’s plan & to express gratitude through acts of kindness & charity.

Strength in Hardship: Surah Duha provides emotional strength and resilience, especially during times of hardship and grief. Its verses remind believers that Allah is aware of their struggles and that better times are ahead, offering solace and comfort during challenging moments.

How it can Change Live and Help anxiety:

Surah Ad-Duha was revealed to the Prophet (saw) to relieve him of these negative feelings and to give him hope, positivity, and the assurance that Allah is with him no matter what. He wondered if Allah was displeased with him and did not want him as a Prophet anymore. Thus, Surah Ad-Duha was revealed to console and help the Messenger ﷺ to overcome his anxiety and depression. This is no different from when we become depressed because of a traumatic experience or the stress of our modern-day lives.

Ø  Molana Ashraf Ali Thanvi writes: To locate a misplaced thing, recite Surat Ad-Duha seven times; the object will be found, In Sha Allah. Alternatively, recite Surat Ad-Duha once and repeat the verses.

Explanation of Surah Ad Duha:

The Surah in its entirety is dedicated to Prophet salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. In it we see a touch of tenderness, affection and mercy to soothe pain and remove hardship and replace it with joy and tranquility. This is how Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala protects and takes care of His righteous slaves.

Revelation was the Prophet’s only link to Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala. It provided him solace and strength in the face of intense hostility and rejection. Then came a time when the revelation was suspended. This caused the Prophet severe distress and anxiety. Imam Ahmad recorded from Jundub that, “The Prophet became ill, so he did not stand for prayer for a night or two. Then a woman came and said, ‘O Muhammad! I think that your devil has finally left you.’”

At this stage, this Surah [Ad-Duha] was revealed as an assurance that your Lord has neither forsaken you, nor is He displeased with you. The hardships were not to last long. Every later period of his life has been better than the former one. He was born an orphan, yet one after another from his grandfather to his uncles everyone was specially compassionate and loving towards him. Who made this arrangement? Did it happen on its own? No, Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala made it happen! Perhaps, his real parents if they were still alive would not have taken care of him as affectionately as his grandfather and uncles did.

Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala guarantees him that after this hardship is over he will be blessed abundantly and he will be pleased. This is one of the express prophecies of the Qur’an, which proved literally true, afterwards, whereas when this prophecy was made there seemed not to be the remotest chance that the helpless and powerless man who had come out to wage a war against the ignorance and paganism of the entire nation, would ever achieve such wonderful success.

Conclusion:

Serving as a reminder of Allah’s continuous mercy and support, surah Ad-Duha encourages gratitude, patience, and the cultivation of a positive mindset. As individuals reflect on its verses, they find reassurance in times of depression and gain spiritual upliftment. The benefits of reciting Surah Duha extends to increased provisions, blessings, and a sense of divine comfort. Ultimately, this chapter exemplifies the Quran’s timeless wisdom, offering enduring lessons for those seeking solace and spiritual growth. Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala instructs him to treat His creatures with the same love and kindness as was showered upon him when he was young and weak. This was a way of repaying and rendering thanks for the favors that His Lord had bestowed on him.

Please recite this Surah daily and as much as you can. May Allah bless me and all those who are reading this. (Aameen Summa Aameen)

SURAH AT-TIN CHAPTER 95 - JUZZ 30

This blog is part of a series of blogs based on my research and compilation of surahs of the Quran, in an effort to understand these surahs in an easy way. Today's effort is on SURAH AT-TIN Chapter: 95, hope going through it will be a learning journey for all of you. May Allah forgive any mistake, omission, or error on my part in its compilation (Aameen Summa Aameen).

English Translation:

1.By the fig, and the olive, 2. By Mount Sinai, 3. And by this city of security (Makkah), 4. Verily, We created man of the best stature (mould), 5. Then We reduced him to the lowest of the low, 6. Save those who believe (in Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous deeds, then they shall have a reward without end (Paradise). 7. Then what (or who) causes you (O disbelievers) to deny the Recompense (i.e. Day of Resurrection)? 8. Is not Allah the Best of judges?

Introduction:

Surah At-Tīn (Arabic: التين, "The Fig, The Figtree") is the ninety-fifth surah of the Qur'an, with 8 ayats or verses, 162 letters, 34 words and all of these words are unique without any repetition.  Surah was revealed in the holy city of Makkah i.e., before Prophet ﷺ migrated to the city of Medina. Its number is 28th in the order of revelation. Surah At-Tin includes the mention of the blessed trees, the fig and the olive, and the mountains of Sinai where the Torah was revealed to Prophet Moses, peace be upon him. It also encompasses the sacred city of Makkah, where the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. The chapter addresses man’s superior position in terms of creation. However, this same man can also fall to the position worse than that of animals and what leads to this as well as the Day of Judgment and the reward of those who preserve the Divine honor bestowed upon them in creation and those who don’t.

Period of Revelation

Surah At-Tin was revealed in a period from 610 to 615 AD. According to Qatadah, this Surah is Madani. Two different views have been reported from Ibn Abbas: first that it is a Makki Surah, and second that it is Madani. But the majority of scholars regard it as a Makki revelation, a manifest symbol of which is the use of the words hadh-al-balad-il-amin (this city of peace) for Makkah. Obviously, if it had been revealed at Madinah, it would not be correct to use the words "this city" for Makkah Besides, a study of the contents of the Surah shows that it belongs to the earliest period of Makkah, for in it there is no sign whatever to indicate that during the period of its revelation any conflict had started between Islam and unbelief.

Major Issue, Divine Law and Guidance

Man is the best creature of all, except the disbelievers. Surah pointed out that there are two kinds of men:

Those who in spite of having been created in the finest of moulds, become inclined to evil and their moral degeneration causes them to be reduced to the lowest of the low.

Those, who by adopting the way of faith and righteousness, remain secure from degeneration and are consistent with the noble position, which is the necessary demand of their having been created in the best of moulds.

The existence among mankind of both these kinds is a factual thing which no one can deny. It is being observed and experienced in society everywhere at all times.

Theme and Subject Matter of Surah At-Tin:

The theme in this Surah, indeed, pivots on the subject of the creation of Man; the finest mould, and the processes of his development and his lowliness. Its theme is the rewards and punishments of the Hereafter. For this purpose, first swearing an oath by the habitats of some illustrious Prophets, it has been stated that Allah has created man in the most excellent of molds. Although at other places in the Quran, this truth has been expressed in different ways, for example, at some places it has been said: "Allah appointed man His vicegerent on the earth and commanded the angels to bow down to him (Al-Baqarah: 30,34, Al-Anam: 165, Al-Araf: 11, Al-Hijr 28,29, An-Naml: 62, Suad 71- 73);" at others that: "Man has become bearer of the Divine trust, which the earth and the heavens and the mountains did not have the power to bear (Al-Ahzab 72);" and at still others that: "We honored the children of Adam and exalted them above many of Our other creatures (Bani Israil 70)," yet here the statement made on oath in particular by the habitats of the Prophets that man has been created in the finest of molds, signifies that mankind has been blessed with such an excellent mold and nature that it gave birth to men capable of attaining to the highest position of Prophet hood, a higher position than which has not been attained by any other creature of God.

Then, it has been stated that there are two kinds of men. those who in spite of having been created in the finest of molds, become inclined to evil and their moral degeneration causes them to be reduced to the lowest of the low, and those who by adopting the way of faith and righteousness remain secure from the degeneration and consistent with the noble position, which is the necessary demand of their having been created in the best of molds. The existence among mankind of both these kinds of men is such a factual thing which no one can deny, for it is being observed and experienced in society everywhere at all times.

In conclusion, this reality is used as an argument to prove that when among the people there exist two separate and quite distinct kinds, how can one deny the judgement and retribution for deeds. If the morally degraded people are not punished and the morally pure people are not rewarded (both end in the dust alike), it would mean that there is no justice in the Kingdom of God, whereas human nature and common sense demands that a judge should do justice. How then can one conceive that Allah, Who is the most just of all judges, would not be just?

Virtues of Surah At-Tin

Surat At-Tin is one of the chapters of the Noble Quran that contains numerous virtues, wisdom, and admonitions in its verses. Some of the virtues of Surah At-Tin include:

Ø  The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: “Whoever recites Surat At-Tin, Allah will grant him two qualities: sound health and certainty as long as he remains in this worldly life. And when he dies, Allah will give him the rewards of the fast of all those who recited it”.

Ø  Also, Ja‘far bin Muhammad al-Sadiq (peace be on him) narrates the following: “Whoever recites it in his obligatory and optional prayers will be given of Paradise whatever pleases him.

Ø  The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: “O Ali, whoever recites Surah At-Tin and Surah Az-Zaitoun (Olive), it is as if he has given in charity the weight of a mountain of gold in the cause of Allah, and Allah will record for him sixty rewards for every verse he recites.”

Ø  Reciting Surah Tin helps in establishing a stronger spiritual connection with Allah.

Ø  Surah seeks Allah's guidance, asking for help in finding a suitable spouse or resolving marital issues.

Ø  Reciting The Holy Quran heals your soul and gives you inner peace.

Ø  A great source for enlightenment and guidance.

Ø  You will be rewarded 10 times and more for every letter you read.

Ø  Reward in paradise: Those who recite it throughout their required and voluntary prayers will receive anything they desire from Paradise.

And then give the water to a pregnant lady throughout the pregnancy. Allah SWT will, inshallah, provide them with good news and make them joyful. The baby boy will be borne by her.

Ø  To avoid insects at home: If a person’s home is attacked by insects. So say this Surah aloud for 11 days. Sprinkle salt where the insects are and blow salt on them. Insha’Allah, they’ll flee and never enter your home. So, Surah at Tin benefits will help you to clean your houses from insects.

Ø  To bring back a runaway person: This surah is the most effective for bringing a runaway back to you. If someone is fleeing and you wish to help him. So, recite this Surah 100 times. The fugitive will return.

Summary of Surah At-Tin:

The surah begins with Allah swearing by the fig and the olive, as well as Mount Sinai and the sacred city of Makkah. It then informs about the creation of humans in the best form and their descent to the lowest of the low, except for those who believe and perform righteous deeds. After enumerating some of the sources of Man's victory and salvation, it concludes with the emphasis on Resurrection and the absolute Sovereignty of Allah. In short, Surah At-Tin is a short, yet highly comprehensive Chapter of the Holy Quran which Glorifies Allah SWT and lets one know about the implications of eternal life in the hereafter. The chapter ends with the punishment and rewards of the good and evil doers in the Hereafter.

Supplication

Ø  Lord! We also confess that You are the Most just of judges.

Ø  O Lord! You created us in the best of moulds. Please help us to be the best, and most successful in our deeds and manners.

Ø  O Lord! Going on the path of faith and doing righteous deeds is not possible save with Your Grace; please bestow Your Grace on us.
