SURAH AL-QADR-Chapter-97

This blog is part of a series of blogs based on my research and compilation of surahs of the Quran, in an effort to understand these surahs in an easy way. Today's effort is on SURAH AL-QADR-Chapter-97, hope going through it will be a learning journey for all of you. May Allah forgive any mistake, omission, or error on my part in its compilation (Aameen Summa Aameen).

 Introduction:

Surah al-Qadr (Arabic: سورة القدر) or Innā Anzalnā (انّا انزلنا). It is a Makki Surah in the thirtieth (30th) Juzz' of the Qur'an and revealed during the same period in which Surahs Yunus, Hud and Al-A'raf were revealed. The name, "al-Qadr", comes from the first verse of the surah, which refers to the revelation of the Quran in the Night of Qadr. The Surah is also known as "Inna Anzalna" because it opens with this phrase. Surah al-Qadr is a Makki Surah, and in the order of revelation, it is the twenty fifth surah revealed to the Prophet (s). In the current order of compilation, this surah is the ninety seventh surah of the Quran. Surah al-Qadr has five (5) verses (ayats), thirty (30) words, and 114 letters. With respect to size, it counts as one of the Mufassalat Suras in the subgroup of "Awsat" (mediums) and a small surah of the Qur'an.

About the occasion of the revelation of Surah al-Qadr it is said that one day the Prophet (s) told his companions about the story of a man from the Israelites who had put on his combat clothes for the sake of God for one thousand months. His companions were surprised by the story. Then, Surah al-Qadr was revealed, which said that vigilance in the Night of Qadr is better than one thousand months of wearing combat clothes for the sake of God.

Surah al-Qadr is about the greatness, virtues, and blessings of the Night of Qadr and the descent of the angels of mercy to Earth on that night. Shi'as appeal to the content of the surah to argue for the necessity of the existence of an Infallible Imam (a) on Earth until the Day of Resurrection. Inspirational Quote: The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.

Major Issues, Divine Laws, and Guidance of Surah al-Qadr:

Ø  The Qur'an is the revelation of Allah.

Ø  Trees, fruit, and vegetables are among the signs of Allah.

Ø  Allah never changes the condition of a people unless they are willing to change themselves.

Ø  Those who do not respond to the call of Allah will have no way to escape from the fire of hell.

Ø  It is the remembrance of Allah that provides tranquility to hearts.

Ø  Rasools have no power to show any miracle except by the leave of Allah.

Four (4) different meanings of Qadr:

Qadr (Arabic: قدر, transliterated Qadr, meaning literally "power", but translated variously as: "fate", "divine fore-ordainment", "predestination," "divine decree", "decree" of Allah", "preordainment") is the concept of divine destiny in Islam.

Theme of the Surah:

The purpose of the surah is to encourage the believers to get up and worship Allah on laylatul Qadr. It tells us when the revelation of the Quran began and follows on from surah Alaq which mentions how it was revealed. The main theme of this Surah is that the Message of Allah is the Truth. It is a mistake for people to reject it. The arguments in the whole Surah turns around this theme, and the basic components of the Message which are Tawhid (God is One), Risalat (Prophet hood) and Resurrection, are repeated over and over again. People are invited to believe in these facts for their own good and if they don't, they are warned about incurring their own ruin. This Surah not only provides reasoning to satisfy the mind, but also appeals to the heart to accept the faith. It puts forward logical arguments in support of the True Message and against the people's wrong notions. It makes frequent use of sympathetic advice to win over the hearts of disbelievers by warning them about the consequences of Kufr (unbelief) and the good results and rewards of having True Faith.

This Surah also answers the objections and doubts of the disbelievers which appeared to be a hindrance to accepting the Divine Message. It also provides comfort, hope, and courage to the believers who were passing through a long and hard ordeal.

Characteristics of Surat Al-Qadr:

Surah Al-Qadr, also known as “The Night of Decree” or “The Power,” is the 97th chapter of the Quran. It is a short surah consisting of only 5 verses, but it holds significant importance in Islam. Here are some of its characteristics:

1.      Revelation: Surah Al-Qadr was revealed in the final part of the Quranic revelation to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) during the month of Ramadan.

2.      Focus on Laylat al-Qadr: The surah emphasizes the significance of Laylat al-Qadr, often referred to as the Night of Decree or Power. It is a night of immense blessings and divine mercy, occurring in the last ten nights of Ramadan, particularly on odd-numbered nights.

3.      Miraculous Nature: The surah describes Laylat al-Qadr as being “better than a thousand months” (Quran 97:3), highlighting the immense spiritual value of worship during this night.

4.      Special Characteristics: Surah Al-Qadr describes the peace and tranquility that prevails throughout the night until the break of dawn. It signifies the descent of angels and the fulfillment of divine decrees.

5.      Encouragement for Worship: The surah encourages believers to seek out Laylat al-Qadr and engage in acts of worship such as prayer, supplication, and Quranic recitation during this blessed night.

6.      Spiritual Reward: It emphasizes the immense spiritual reward for those who sincerely worship during Laylat al-Qadr, promising forgiveness of past sins and elevation of spiritual status.

7.      Reminder of Divine Mercy: Surah Al-Qadr serves as a reminder of Allah’s mercy and compassion towards humanity, providing an opportunity for believers to seek forgiveness, guidance, and blessings.

Virtues

·         In some hadiths, many divine rewards and virtues have been cited for the surah. It is quoted that the best surahs that can be recited in obligatory prayers after Qur'an 1 are surahs of al-Qadr and al-Tawhid. Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (a) was quoted as saying that "the superiority of the faith of someone who believes in 'Inna anzalna' and its interpretation over someone who does not have such a faith is like the superiority of a human person over an animal."

·         According to another hadith from Imam al-Sadiq (a), if someone recites Surah Inna Anzalna in one of his obligatory prayers, the unseen messenger (an angel) will address him like this: "O the servant of God! God has forgiven every sin you have thus far committed. Now resume your actions anew."

·         On the virtue of studying this Surah, there is a narration from the holy Prophet (S) which says: "He who recites it (Surah Qadr) will be rewarded like the one who has fasted the whole month of Ramadan and has kept vigil the night of Qadr, (the Night of Honour).”

·         Another narration from Imam Baqir (as) says: "He who recites Surah Qadr loudly and openly like a person who fights in the Holy War on the path of Allah and he who recites it hiddenly like a person who swims in his own blood for the sake of Allah".

·         One who recites Surah Qadr twenty-one times after Maghrib on the first night of Ramadan, will attain barakah in his sustenance like water flowing down the hill, means his sustenance will increase as fast as the water flows down the hill.

·         Aisha (r.a) related that the Prophet (pbuh) said: “Look for Lailatul Qadr on an odd-numbered night during the last ten nights of Ramadan.” So, the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th or 29th night of Ramadan could be Shab-e-Qadr.

Benefits of Surah Al-Qadr:

Whoever recites this surah in Ramadan, will receive countless good deeds from Allah as compensation. Protection from evil with surah Qadr benefits. If you recite this surah 1 time before sleep, you will be safe from any evilness. Also, Allah will protect your house the whole night.

Settlement of Debts:  One of the benefits of reciting this surah is settling one’s debts. One of our Imams said, “Those who wish to pay their debts must seek forgiveness from God a lot and recite surah Qadr many times.”

Eyesight: Whoever recites surah Qadr close to a glass of water, then drinks it, God will place a light in his eyes.

Ease of Childbirth: Anytime childbirth becomes difficult for a woman, one must recite surah Qadr next to her.

Having Children: Some people are deprived of having children or the desired gender of their child. One of our Imams has said in this regard, “Write surah Qadr with musk and saffron, then wash it and give to a woman to drink so she can conceive.”

Cure for Liver Disease: If someone writes surah Qadr on pottery and washes it with rainwater, then adds some sugar to it and drinks it, God willing, he will have a healthy liver.

Sound Sleep and Safety at Time of Sleep:  Whoever recites surah Qadr 15 times after the ‘Isha prayer, he will be safe until the next night. And, whoever recites surah Qadr seven times before going to sleep, God will protect him until morning.

Answer to Prayer:  Whoever recites surah Qadr in one of his obligatory prayers, God will accept his prayer and double his reward. And, whoever recites this surah and then says a prayer, God will answer his prayer. God willing, by reading, memorizing, and reciting surah Qadr, we will be able to receive all of these rewards and benefits. Increase in Wealth.

Spiritual Elevation: Reciting Surah Al-Qadr elevates one’s spirituality and draws the believer closer to Allah. It is a means of connecting with the divine and seeking His guidance and mercy.

Forgiveness of Sins: The recitation of Surah Al-Qadr during the month of Ramadan, especially on Laylat al-Qadr, is believed to lead to the forgiveness of past sins. It is a time for repentance and seeking Allah’s pardon.

Guidance and Wisdom: Surah Al-Qadr contains profound wisdom and guidance for believers. Its verses shed light on the mysteries of the universe and the divine decree, providing comfort and direction to those who ponder upon them.

Protection from Evil: Reciting Surah Al-Qadr acts as a spiritual shield, protecting believers from evil influences and harm. It instills a sense of peace and security in the hearts of those who seek refuge in Allah.

Healing Properties: Surah Al-Qadr is believed to possess healing properties, both physical and spiritual. Its recitation is often accompanied by a sense of tranquility and well-being, providing solace to those who are suffering.

Strengthening of Faith: Regular recitation of Surah Al-Qadr strengthens one’s faith and trust in Allah. It serves as a reminder of His power and mercy, fostering resilience and perseverance in the face of challenges.

Community Unity: The recitation of Surah Al-Qadr fosters a sense of unity and solidarity among believers, especially during Ramadan. It is a time when Muslims come together to worship and seek blessings as a community, strengthening their bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood.

Manifestation of Mercy: Surah Al-Qadr is a reminder of Allah’s boundless mercy and compassion towards His creation. It is a time when believers earnestly pray for His mercy and blessings, seeking His favor in this life and the hereafter.

Recitation of Surah al Qadr Rumi 7 times before sleeping enhances the wealth of the reciter. Along with providing safety, it also tends to increase the wealth of the reciter.

Imam al-Baqir (a.s.) is also reported to have said, “Whenever a servant (of Allah) recites Surah al-Qadr

7 times after dawn (fajr)ing, a line of angels will invoke blessings and mercy upon him, each seventy times.”

Imam Muhammad al-Taqi(a.s.) is reported to have mentioned abundant rewards for one who recites Surah

al-Qadr seventy-six times a day; seven times before the dawn (Fajr) Prayer and ten times after it, ten times before the supererogatory (mustahab / nafilah) prayer of midday (Zohar) and twenty-one times after it, ten times after the Afternoon (Asr) Prayer, seven times after the Evening (Isha’) Prayer, and eleven times when going to bed. One of these rewards is that Almighty Allah will create one thousand angels to record the rewards of this act for thirty-six thousand years.

Conclusion,

In conclusion, the benefits of reciting Surah Al-Qadr are manifold, encompassing spiritual, emotional, and social dimensions. As believers engage with its verses, they draw closer to their Creator, find solace in His guidance, and experience transformative growth in their lives. May we continue to seek blessings through the recitation of Surah Al-Qadr and embody its teachings in our daily lives. Moreover it has been stated that in this night the angels and Gabriel descend with every decree (which in verse 4 of Surah Ad-Dukhan has been described as arm-hakim: wise decree) by the leave of their Lord, and it is all peace from evening till morning; that is, there is no interference of evil in it.

Supplication:

o   Lord! Bestow on us such a wakefulness and acknowledgement that we take sufficient benefit from the virtue of the Night of Honor.

o   O Lord! We hope, only, that our predestined fates be determined based on Your Grace.

o   O Lord! Do not put us among those who are deprived from this month, because it is the worst deprivation.

SURAH AL-BAYYINAH – Chapter-98

This blog is part of a series of blogs based on my research and compilation of surahs of the Quran, in an effort to understand these surahs in an easy way. Today's effort is on SURAH AL-BAYYINAH–Chapter-98, hope going through it will be a learning journey for all of you. May Allah forgive any mistake, omission, or error on my part in its compilation (Aameen Summa Aameen).

English Translation:

In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Those who disbelieve from among the People of the Book and the polytheists will not dissipate until clear proof comes to them.(1) A Messenger from God Indeed, they are pages purified (2) in which are valuable books (3) and those who were given the Book did not disperse except after clear proof had come to them (4) And they were not commanded except To worship God, the one who has the religion, the religion, and the ritual of the good The books and the two participants in the fire of Hell are the two of them in it The best of creation. (7) Their reward is with their Lord, the Gardens of Eden, beneath which rivers flow. They will abide therein forever - contentment Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him - that is for him who fears his Lord (8)

Introduction:

Surah Bayyinah or Lam Yakun or Qayyimah as it is also referred to, is the 98th chapter of the Quran present in Juzz 30, it has 8 ayats (verses), ninety-four words, and 404 letters and is a response to the disbelievers claim that if clear proof came to them they would accept the truth. These ayahs were revealed shortly after Muhammed started to pray publicly, as many people questioned his actions. However, as the verses indicate this did not happen. The theme of Surah al-Bayyinah is the reaction of the Ahl al-Kitāb (People of the Book, Jews and Christians) and the pagans to the proofs of Islam. In this Surah, Allah informs us that these groups split up upon hearing the message and seeing the evidences. Bayyinah means Evidence, The Proof, The Clear Sign, The Evidence of the Truth.

Revelation of Surah:

Where Surah Al-Bayyinah was revealed, at Makkah or Madinah, is disputed. Some commentators say it is a Makki revelation according to most scholars; others say it is a Madani revelation according to most scholars. Ibn Az Zubair and Ata bin Yasar hold the view that it is Madani. The reason for the revelation of Surah Al-Bayyinah was that the Jews and Christians were in a state of profound darkness due to their ignorance of what they should have believed in and followed from the laws of their prophets, except for those whom Allah protected from deviating.

At the beginning of the Surah, Allah mentioned that these groups differed and many of them disbelieved after they received the Bayyinah (clear proofs) of Islam. Allah did not just send down revelation claiming that Islam is the truth. The revelation came with clear evidence that it is from Allah. It is this evidence that separates Islam from false religion.

Lesson of the Surah Bayyinah:

Asking the Prophet as an example in calling and reaching Allah Almighty. The Muslim realizes that the spread of corruption on earth requires a new calling, a preacher with knowledge. The Muslim realizes that deviating from the right path is not only ignorance. Surah al-Bayyinah characterizes the animus of the unbelieving people of the book and their incredulity as to the truth of Islam and the prophet hood of prophet Muhammad (s). According to this surah, such people as well as polytheists are the worst of the creatures, who should be punished by the fire of the hell. In this Surah, Allah informs us that these groups split up upon hearing the message and seeing the evidences. A group became believers; whom Allah calls the best of creation in this Surah. While others rejected the message and disbelieved, so Allah called them the worst of creation. Allah ends the Surah with a promise of punishment for the disbelievers and reward in Paradise for the believers.in short, lessons learned from Surah Al-Bayyinah are:

Ø  A Muslim should be proud that the Prophet (PBUH) is the clear argument.

Ø  Taking the Prophet as an example in calling and reaching Allah Almighty.

Ø  The Muslim realizes that the spread of corruption on earth requires a new calling, a preacher with knowledge.

Ø  The Muslim realizes that deviating from the right path is not only ignorance. Rather, it is the result of being tempted by the knowledge.

Ø  The need for a Muslim to be interested in being in the category of the best of the wilderness.

Ø  Knowing that the basic rule of the Islamic religion is the devotion of religion to Allah Almighty.

Ø  A Muslim must be humble to those who are inferior to him, and follow the example of the Prophet.

Surah Bayyinah important:

Surah Al-Bayyinah is one of the greatest surahs in the Quran, known for its profound and detailed content that addresses important issues related to faith, division, and guidance. This surah is considered a valuable source that directs Muslims towards a better understanding of Islam and achieving closeness to Allah.

In this surah Aleah has divided its creation into best and worst as the word ‘bariyyah’ (بریة) refers to creatures.

The Worst of Creation in Surah Bayyinah:

The proof and argument for being the worst of people is that a Prophet and book is sent to a person and he understands the reality but remains stubbornly on his own path due to his arrogance.  The blessing of guidance is the greatest of Divine blessings and therefore, disbelief in that is the greatest disbelief.

The Best of Creation in Surah Bayyinah:

The best of creatures are those who are internally believers and monotheists and are apparently and externally good-doers. In these verses good has been confined to the believers just as evil has been confined to the disbelievers. This is shown through the use of the pronoun ‘hum’ (هم) in both the verses. If it had not been so the verse would have read as: they are the worst (or best), but others can be too. But now it indicates that they (only) are the worst (and the best). The best of creatures are eternally in Heavens that are eternal

The Virtue in Studying Surah Bayyinah

Ø  On the virtue in reciting this Surah, there is a tradition from the holy Prophet (S) who has said: "If people knew how blissful this Surah is (Bayyinah), they would leave their property & family to learn it”.

Ø  Someone from the' Khaza'ih’ people asked: "O Messenger of Allah! What is the reward for reciting it?".

He (S) answered: "Neither a hypocrite nor those in whose hearts contain doubt about Allah recite it. By Allah, the near-stationed angels have been reciting it from the time the heavens and the earth were created and do not languish in its recitation.

Ø  There will be no servant who recites it at night but that Allah sends angels who protect him in his Faith and his present life and that seek forgiveness and mercy for him; and when on the day he recites it, he will be rewarded as much as what the day sheds light upon and what the night darkens.”

Benefits of Reciting Surah Bayyinah

Ø  Regarding the benefits of reciting this chapter, the Prophet (PBUH) narrates that one who recites it will be besides the best of God’s creation in terms of place & condition on Qiyamah.

Ø  Another hadith from him says: “Had people known what merits it contains, they would have left their families and wealth aside and learned it.”

Ø  Jafar bin Muhammad al-Sadiq (peace be on him) narrates that those who recite this chapter will be free from shirk (polytheism), admitted into the Prophet’s creed and given an easy trial by God.

Ø  Increase in Knowledge. Surah Al Bayyinah provides a wealth of knowledge that is not merely academic but deeply spiritual and practical.

Ø  Understanding of Ignorance. The Surah elucidates the concept of willful ignorance. Despite the presence of clear signs and guidance from Allah through various prophets and divine books, some individuals choose to remain in denial.

Ø  Recitation as Dua. Reciting Surah Al Bayyinah with understanding and reflection can serve as a powerful dua, helping individuals stay away from sins and cultivate a character that is pleasing to Allah.

Ø  Warning Against Heathenism. Heathenism, or the rejection of the divine, is strongly condemned in Surah Al Bayyinah. Heathens not only deny the existence of Allah but also reject the concept of divinity altogether. This form of disbelief is considered one of the gravest sins, attracting severe punishment both in this life and the hereafter.

Ø  Dua Against Shirk. Surah Al Bayyinah contains verses that warn against the dangers of shirk, providing a clear understanding of its various forms. Regular recitation of these verses can serve as a protection against committing shirk, keeping the believer alert and conscious of maintaining Tawhid, the oneness of Allah.

Ø  Increases Taqwa. Surah Al Bayyinah helps cultivate this sense of Taqwa by making individuals reflect on their actions and intentions. With increased Taqwa, believers are more likely to engage in good deeds and abstain from wrongdoing

Summary of Surah Bayyinah:

The chapter starts off with talking about God’s clear proof of guidance over the people through the person of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his household) and how the disbelievers refused to accept the truth even after they had seen the clear proof. Surah Bayyinah’s verses also show that Islam is a universal religion for all people and that God has always even before Islam, guided the people and sent down Divine Books, teachings and Prophets for them. The chapter ends with introducing who the best and worst of people are and indicating the blessings and rewards that await the best of creations.

SURAH ZALZALAH Chapter: 99

This blog is part of a series of blogs based on my research and compilation of surahs of the Quran, in an effort to understand these surahs in an easy way. Today's effort is on SURAH AL-ZALZALAH-Chapter-99, hope going through it will be a learning journey for all of you. May Allah forgive any mistake, omission, or error on my part in its compilation (Aameen Summa Aameen).

Introduction:

The Holy Quran consists of 114 surahs, including Surah Zalzalah ( Arabic: سورة الزلزلة ) written Surah Al-Zalzalah,  which is the 99th surah, but what is the subject matter of surah Zalzalah that we will know exactly in this article and learn all the facts about it including the meaning, the interpretation of it, and how it explains the Day of Resurrection and the state of the earth and what will happen to people on this day especially after the Earth’s revolution and the great earthquake that will happen, The surah also explains how people will be judged for their good or bad deeds, and the result of their actions in this world, and how will Allah reveal to the earth to utter what happened on it and the actions of man on earth. Surah Zalzalah is presented in Juzz’ 30 with 8 verses, with 158 letters, 36 words and 29 unique words without repetition

Inspirational Quote: “So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it”. Though it is usually classified as a Medinan surah, the period under which the surah was revealed is not unanimously agreed upon by Qur'anic exegetes. The Earthquake - Al Zalzalah. In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful! When the earth is rocked with her (final) earthquake, when the earth shakes off her burdens, and man cries: What is the matter with her? on that day she will tell her news, that your Lord has inspired her (with His command).

History of Surah Zalzalah:

Surah al Zalzalah was revealed after Surah al-Nisa, which was revealed in the period between the Treaty of Hudaibiya and the Battle of Tabuk, before Surah Al-Hadid. It was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in Makkah before the migration to Madinah

Summary of Surah Zalzalah:

Its theme is the second life after death and presentation in it before man of the full record of the deeds done by him in the world. In the first three sentences it has been told briefly how the second life after death will take place and how confounding it will be for man.

The surah's theme is the second life after death and presentation in it before man of the full record of the deeds done by him in the world. In the first three sentences it has been told briefly how the second life after death will take place and how confounding it will be for man.

The reason for the revelation of surah Zalzalah:

One of the analysis is that since the beginning of the chapter deals with the Day of Judgement, it must have been revealed due to dispute and discord on when the Day of Judgement will take place. The chapter is then revealed and tells them that the Day of Judgement is “when the earth shakes”. Surah Zalzalah urges us to hold ourselves to account and to not be complacent about bad deeds, especially the ones that are less obvious. This lesson is supported by other surahs and hadiths.

The lessons of Surah Al Zalzalah

Surah al-Zalzalah speaks about the signs of the Day of judgement and that the righteous and wrong-doers will see the consequences of their deeds.

Importance of Surah Zalzalah:

Sayyidna Anas and Ibn ` Abbas ؓ report that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that Surah Al-Zalzalah equals half the Qur'an, Surah Al-Ikhlas equals a third of the Qur'an and Surah Al-Kafirun equals a quarter of the Qur'an.

Benefits of Surah Zalzalah:

Ø  Surah Al-Zalzalah protects against the malice of the accursed Satan, especially when recited before going to sleep.

Ø  Also, it helps people to get rid of the confusion, and help manage things.

Ø  Reading surah Zalzalah helps to increase goodness and sustenance and Some say that it is better to read surah Zalzalah

Ø  With Surah, Al-Waqi’ah to seek sustenance from Allah Almighty.

Ø  Surah Zalzalah helps to fix family problems and reduce conflicts.

What does Surah Zalzalah teach us?

The Surah emphasizes the accountability of individuals for their actions, no matter how minor. It tells us that people will be shown their deeds and that even actions as small as an atom's weight of good or evil will be brought into account (Al-Quran, 99:7-8).

Surah Al-Zalzalah, also known as “The Earthquake deals with the theme of the Day of Judgment and the inevitable accountability of every individual for their actions. Here is a breakdown of its central themes:

1. The Cosmic Event: The Surah begins by describing a great cosmic upheaval—specifically, an earthquake of such magnitude that it causes the Earth to “throw out” all that is within it (Al-Quran, 99:2). This is symbolic of the Day of Judgment when the natural order will be disrupted.

2. Individual Accountability: The Surah emphasizes the accountability of individuals for their actions, no matter how minor. It tells us that people will be shown their deeds and that even actions as small as an atom’s weight of good or evil will be brought into account (Al-Quran, 99:7-8). This speaks to the precision and fairness of divine justice.

3. Presentation of Deeds: The Surah concludes by stating that individuals will be presented with their deeds. This will be a moment of absolute transparency, leaving no room for denial or dispute. The idea is to instill the awareness that every action, regardless of its scale, has consequences.

4. Divine Justice: The overarching theme of the Surah is divine justice. It serves as a solemn reminder that there will be a day when the social, ethical, and moral fabric of human interaction will be evaluated in a divine court, where the judgments are inescapably just.

Hadith about surah Zalzalah:

One such Hadith reported by Imam Ahmad, Tirmidhi, and others states that whoever recites Surah Al-Zalzalah will get the reward of reciting half of the Qur’an. This Hadith highlights the immense spiritual weight and reward attached to this Surah, despite its brevity.

SURAH AL–ADIYAT Chapter–100

This blog is part of a series of blogs based on my research and compilation of surahs of the Quran, in an effort to understand these surahs in an easy way. Today's effort is on SURAH AL-ADIYAT - Chapter - 100, hope going through it will be a learning journey for all of you. May Allah forgive any mistake, omission, or error on my part in its compilation (Aameen Summa Aameen).

Introduction:

Al-Adiyat (The Chargers, The Assaulters) or The War Horses which run swiftly is the 100th chapter of the Qur'an, with 11 ayats or verses, 168 letters and 40 words, and is Juzz 30. Regarding the timing and contextual background of the revelation, it is an earlier "Meccan surah", which means it is believed to have been revealed in Mecca, rather than later in Medina. Surah Al Adiyat is one of the Quranic surahs that talks about the sky sent by rain and the earth flooded with plants and animals, and uses these natural phenomena as a sign of our faith in Allah and His great power, and Surah Al Adiyat carries a strong message about God’s ability to create and revive, and invites us to reflect on His greatness – Almighty – and thank Him for His great blessings.

Surah Adiyat is a short but powerful chapter that addresses themes of human ingratitude, materialism, and the Day of Judgment. It vividly portrays a scene of warhorses charging into battle, symbolizing the power, strength, and fervor of those who engage in combat. The surah emphasizes the role of such horses and their riders in the pursuit of worldly gain, highlighting the human tendency to become preoccupied with material possessions and neglectful of their spiritual responsibilities.

Reasons for the Revelation of Surah Al-Adiyat:

the reason behind its revelation is that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) had sent a secret mission to a tribe called Kinanah. The companion Al-Mundhir ibn ‘Amr Al-Ansari was appointed as the leader of the mission. However, their return was delayed, and the hypocrites spread rumors that they had been killed. Allah revealed this surah to inform Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) about the mission’s success and the well-being of its members.

Another tradition says that this Surah was revealed after the occurrence of the war/ that-us-salasil/. the description is as follows:

In the eighth year A.H. the Prophet (S) of Islam was informed that twelve thousand strong had gathered in Yabis to make a sudden and very heavy attack on Medina to kill the Muslims, the holy Prophet and Ali (as) as well. Upon receiving the news of this gathering of hostile forces. The holy Prophet (S) sent a group of the Muslim followers to them under the command of some of his companions, but they returned without gaining any positive result. Finally, he sent Hazrat Ali (as) with a great number of the emigrants (Muhajirs), and the helpers, under his command, to meet them.

They marched by night and kept themselves concealed by day and thus, they reached the enemy. Surrounding the enemy's forces, Hazrat Ali (as) offered them (to follow the religion of) Islam at first, but they did not accept it.Then, the Muslims attacked them in the early hours of dawn when it was still dark and won an easy victory. Most of the enemy's men were killed, and those who remained, Ali (as) put them in chains and took them, with their collective properties, to the holy Prophet (S) in Medina.

Before the Muslim forces reached Medina, this Surah was revealed. The holy Prophet (S) came out early that very morning and recited this Surah in prayer. After finishing the prayer some Muslim followers told him that they had not heard that Surah before. Then, he agreed and added that Ali (as) defeated the enemies, and Gabriel, bringing that Surah, had informed him of it the previous night.

A few days later Hazrat Ali (as) entered Medina with the 'spoils of war' and captives. Some believe that this is one of the clear examples of the verse and it is not an occasion of revelation.

Meanings of Surah Al-Adiyat

Surah Al Adiyat addresses several important themes, including:

Ø  Emphasizing the greatness of Allah and His sovereignty, as well as His watchfulness over people.

Ø  Describing human characteristics, particularly the qualities of stinginess and injustice.

Ø  Warning about the horrors of the Day of Judgment and Allah’s retribution for people’s actions.

1- Emphasizing the Greatness of Allah: The surah begins by swearing an oath by “Al-Adiyat,” which refers to the swift horses that run and pant, indicating the swiftness of Allah’s accountability and the inevitability of punishment. The surah also mentions the Day of Resurrection, revealing the horrors of that day and Allah’s retribution for people’s actions. All of this signifies the greatness of Allah, His sovereignty, and His watchfulness over people.

2- Describing Human Characteristics: Surah Al Adiyat highlights certain human characteristics, including stinginess and injustice. In verse 6, Allah says, “Indeed, mankind, to his Lord, is ungrateful,” meaning that humans are unjust and accumulate wealth without spending it. This description applies to many people who are eager to accumulate wealth but are stingy towards themselves and others in need.

3- Warning about the Horrors of the Day of Judgment: Surah Al Adiyat discusses the horrors of the Day of Judgment and Allah’s retribution for people’s actions. In verse 9, Allah says, “Does man not know that when the contents of the graves are scattered,” indicating that people should realize that Allah will expose everything on the Day of Judgment and will reward individuals according to their deeds.

Lessons of Sural Al Adiyat:

·         We need to show gratitude to Allah’s favours upon us; how He has made the world and other creations subjugated to man.

·         It doesn’t take much to realise how ungrateful humans are through their actions.

·         Humans are naturally inclined towards wealth. It’s how we acquire it and use it that matters.

·         On the Day of Judgement, the dead will arise from their graves, and the secrets of mankind will be exposed.

Theme of Surah Al Adiyat:

The object of this Surah is to make people realize how evil man becomes when he denies the Hereafter, or becomes heedless of it, and also to warn them that in the Hereafter not only their visible and apparent deeds, but even the secrets hidden in their hearts too will be subjected to scrutiny. For this purpose, the general chaos and confusion prevailing in Arabia: bloodshed, looting and plundering on every side; tribes subjecting other tribes to raids, no one could have peaceful sleep at night out of fear that some enemy tribe might raid his settlement early in the morning, is pointed out. Every Arab was fully conscious of this state of affairs and realized that it was wrong. Although the plundered bemoaned his miserable, helpless state and the plunderer rejoiced when the plunderer himself was plundered, he too realized how abject was the condition in which the whole nation was involved. Referring to this very state of affairs, it is said: all this is happening because the people do not know their life after death and their accountability before Allah.

Then an example of stallions (horses used in war) is given to reflect on human attitude towards Allah. Stallions to whom man provide food and water are so grateful to him that they jump into the valley of death on his command while man is ungrateful to Allah even though He has given him life, all faculties, food and other provisions. This example shows that an ungrateful person is worse than an animal. Such a person is so blinded by the love of worldly wealth that he tries to obtain it by every means, however impure and filthy it may be. He would never have behaved so had he known the time when the dead would be raised from their graves and when the intentions and motives with which they had done all sorts of deeds in the world would be exposed and brought out before everyone to see by their Lord and Sustainer (Allah) Who knows what man has done and what punishment or reward man should be awarded.
