1) Competition
for worldly gain distracts you. 2) Until you come to your graves. 3) Nay; you
will come to know. 4) Again, nay; you will come to know. 5) Nay; if you knew for certain [the consequences
of your actions, you would not act as you do].
6) You will surely see the blazing fire.
7) Again, you will surely see it with absolute certainty. 8) Then on that day you will surely be asked

Introduction:
Surah Takathur is one of the chapters of the 30th Juzz’
of the Quran and speaks about those who get distracted from God’s remembrance
and worship because they are so busy boasting of their blessings to each other.
Surah At-Takathur, also known as “The Rivalry for More” or “The Piling Up,” is
a chapter from the Holy Quran, the holy book of Islam. It takes its name from
the word “at Takathur” mentioned in the first verse of the Surah, and it serves
as a powerful reminder of the consequences of worldly obsession.
Background:
As we mentioned before, commentators believe that this
Surah was revealed against the tribes who vied in boasting with one another and
prided themselves on increasing their wealth, position, and the number of their
adherents so to add to the number of men in each tribe, they even went to the
cemetery and counted the tribal graves. Some believe that the meaning refers to
two tribes from the tribes of Quraish in Mecca, while some others think it
refers to two tribes from the helpers of the Prophet (S), the Ansar, in Medina;
and still, some relate it to the vying of the Jews to others, though to
consider the Surah Meccan seems more appropriate. But, it is certain that
whatever these occasions of revelation could be, they never limit the meaning
of the verse.
Period
of Revelation:
The precise period of revelation for Surah At-Takathur
is a subject of debate among Islamic scholars. While many believe it to be a
Makki Surah, meaning it was revealed in the city of Mecca during the early
years of Prophet Muhammad’s mission, there are some traditions that suggest it
could be Madani, revealed after the Prophet’s migration to Medina. These
traditions are not universally accepted, and the majority of scholars maintain
that it is of Makki origin.
Reason
for Its revelation:
Allah (SWT) revealed Surah Takathur to warn us against the
“Unbounded Greed” (Greed for more and more) of human nature, and temporariness
of life. Furthermore, it reminds us that one day we will be held accountable
for our wasteful use of the boon of life. Surah Takathur is a short but
powerful surah that warns us about the dangers of being obsessed with worldly
gains and forgetting our ultimate purpose in life.
Lessons
from Surah al-Takathur:
1. Don’t
be distracted by this world
2. Everyone
will die one day
3. Anything
which distracts you from Allah is not good
4. Allah
will ask us how we used all our blessings
Surah
al-Takathur warn us against:
In it the people have been warned of the evil
consequences of world worship because of which they spend their lives in
acquiring more and more of worldly wealth, material benefits and pleasures, and
position and power, till death, and in vying with one another and bragging and
boasting about their acquisitions.
Virtue
of Surah al-Takathur:
On the virtue of reciting the Surah, a tradition from
the Prophet (S) says: "He who recites it, Allah will not account the
bounties he was given in the world and He will award him such a reward as if he
had recited one thousand verses (of the Qur'an). 1
