Surah Al-Humazah - Chapter 104.

This blog is part of a series of blogs based on my research and compilation of surahs of the Quran, in an effort to understand these surahs in an easy way. Today's effort is on SURAH AL-HUMAZAH Chapter 104, hope going through it will be a learning journey for all of you. May Allah forgive any mistake, omission, or error on my part in its compilation (Aameen Summa Aameen).

Introduction:

Al-Humazah (Arabic: الهمزة: "The Backbiter", "The Slanderer", or "The Scorner"). It is the 104th Surah in the Quran Pak with 9 verses. This Surah was most likely revealed at Mecca during the early days of Muhammad’s proclamation of his Prophet hood. The surah's position in the Quran Majeed in Juzz 30. The meaning of the surah is that money won’t save anyone on the day of judgment and in the afterlife. The surah that opens with a threat of impending affliction and grief to The Scandal-monger or the slanderous reviler, one who, in greediness of wealth and acclaim, defames others. It takes its name from “the slanderer” (Humazah) mentioned in verse 1. This Meccan Sūra condemns all sorts of scandal, backbiting, and selfish hoarding of wealth, as destroying the hearts and affections of men. Surah focuses on this type of sleazy behavior and condemns it (wealth). The name of the Surah is derived from the verb "Humazah" Together with "lumaza" which follows it.

The Occasion of Revelation:

A group of commentators have said that the verses of this Surah were revealed against Walid-ibn-i-Muqayyarah who used to backbite the holy Prophet (S) and made sarcastic remarks and mocked him (S).

Some others believe that they are said against some of the chiefs of the pagan Arabs and the known enemies of Islam, such as: Akhnas-ibn-i-Shariq, Umiyat-ibn-i-Khalaf, and 'As-ibn-i-wa'il.

But, even if we accept these occasions of revelation, again the generality of the meaning of the verses remains unchanged, and it covers all those who have these characteristics.

Lessons from Surah Al-Humazah:

Ø  The Surah Al-Humazah takes its name from the first verses Al-Humazah (The Slanderer). It teaches that severe punishment awaits the backbiters and slanderers. Backbiting is saying bad things about a person when he or she is not present.

Ø  Those who look down upon people, regarding and treating them as lowly, are destined for destruction in the Hereafter.

Ø  Those who talk arrogantly to others are also destined for destruction.

Ø  Never amass wealth behaving as if it will remain with you forever.

Ø  Man should learn to control his tongue so as not to harm others.

Surah Teaches the following to the believers and followers of Islam:

Ø  One should not feel that one’s wealth will prolong one’s life forever and as such

Ø  Seek pleasure of Allah by using his wealth.

Ø  One should avoid miserliness.

Ø  Man should be conscious of Allah’s crushing fire (Humazah)

What is the importance of Surah Al Humazah:?

The main point of Humazah surah is on the consequences of man's loss. It criticizes people who insult others, whether via word or deed, and believe that their money would protect them from death, and it portrays the destiny of Hell that awaits them.

1-Surah Humazah exposes the faults that were widespread among pre-Islamic materialistic hoarders of riches.

2-Surah Humazah contains Islam’s essential teachings.

3-surah Humazah teaches Muslims that people should not be chastised for their materialistic attitude.

If this Surah is read in the sequence of the Surahs beginning with al-Zalzala, one can fully well understand how the fundamental beliefs of Islam and its teachings were impressed on the people’s minds in the earliest stage in Makkah. In Surah Az-Zilzal, it was said that in the Hereafter man's full record will be placed before him and not an atom's weight of good or evil done by him in the world will have been left unrecorded.

Virtues & Benefits Os Surah Humzah:

Ø  Those who recite Surah Humazah in his optional salats will be rewarded by Allah, who will remove his poverty and make it easier for him to earn a living, keep him safe from accidental death, and credit virtues equal to the number of those who ridiculed the Holy Prophet (Sallal laahu alihi wasallam) and his companions. As, The Holy Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said: “He who recites this Surah will be rewarded ‘ten good deeds’ as many as the number of those who mocked Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) and his companions”

Ø  Our Beloved Imam Sadiq (Radi Allahu Tala Anhu) declared that whoever recites Humazah surah in any of his required prayers, poverty will flee from him, nourishment will approach him, he will be secure from poverty, and he will be repelled from a horrific death.

Ø  Reciting Surah al-Humazah is also a remedy for eye discomfort and should be done before softly blowing into the eyes to relieve pain.

Ø  Surah Humazah Taweez/talisman around one’s neck helps shield against the ‘evil eye’ for children.

Ø  Recite surah 104 for the advantages of an easy death.

Ø  Those who recite Surah Humazah in his optional salats will be rewarded by Allah, who will remove his poverty and make it easier for him to earn a living, keep him safe from accidental death.

Ø  If surah 104 is written on paper and wrapped around the neck of a man with painful eyes, the agony will be relieved.

Ø  Recite Surah Humazah and breathe over the guy who is the victim of an evil eye, and the evil eye’s effects will be removed, inshallah.
