This blog is part of a series of blogs based on my research and compilation of surahs of the Quran, in an effort to understand these surahs in an easy way. Today's effort is on Surah Quraish Chapter-106, hope going through it will be a learning journey for all of you. May Allah forgive any mistake, omission, or error on my part in its compilation (Aameen Summa Aameen).
Introduction:
Surah Quraysh (Arabic text: قُرَيْش) is the 106th
Surah of the Qur’an. It is titled in English “Quraish” and composed of 4 verses
and it’s in the 30th PARA. This surah urges the Quraysh tribe who dominated
Mecca to serve God, who had protected them, for the sake of their own future.
It is one of two surahs containing 4 ayats; the other is Al-Ikhlas. It forms a
pair with the preceding surah, al-Fil, reminding the Quraysh of the favors that
Allah had bestowed upon them. Allah granted Quraish many gifts, one of them
being preserving from fear and starving, their dignity and special place among
Arabian tribes, but they forgot and took their idols without Allah. So the
Surah is memory & exhortation to them to remember and return to worship
Allah, the only God worthy to be worshiped.
Why
and when it was revealed:
Surah Quraysh was revealed as an announcement of
Allah's great blessings and Mercy for Quraysh. Allah (SWT) has granted them
security, peace, and honour. He (SWT) saved them from Abraha Al-Habashi who
aimed at destroying the Kaaba as mentioned in Surah Al-Fil. Further to and drew
their attention to the fact that He is the one who is blessed with them, and
that he is the one who deserves thanks and worship. The surah was revealed in
the holy city of Makkah i.e., before Prophet ﷺ migrated to the city of Medina.
Message
of surah Quraish:
The message of surah Quraish (Arabic: سورة قريش ), is
that Allah is the protective and preserver from all fears in our life, he is
the Powerful God, the bestower of Honors who granted Quraish with their
neighborhood to the sacred house “Kaaba”. He is the opener and the sustainer
who expanded their sustenance, although the Arabian Peninsula was a barren land
with no water to cultivate or special industry. Allah is the enricher who
bestowed Quraish their dignity and their special respect and place among Arabs
due to his preserving the sacred house, and he is the only one truly worthy of
worship.
Allah has favored the Quraish with seven
characteristics which He has never given to anyone before them and will never
give to anyone after them” These
characteristics are:
Ø Assumes
guardianship of the Sacred House (al-Hijabah).
Ø One
of them is appointed to the position of Caliph (al-Khilafah).
Ø Granted
the gift of prophecy.
Ø Someone
among them is responsible for providing water to pilgrims (al-Siqayah) during
Hajj.
Ø They
were awarded victory over the elephant army (Al-Fil) that came to destroy
Kaaba.
Ø For
seven years, no one worshipped Allah SWT except for them.
Ø A
Surah was revealed on them in which no one other than them was mentioned.
Lessons
of Surah Quraysh:
Surah Quraysh imparts crucial lessons, emphasizing
Allah’s blessings upon Quraysh and the importance of gratitude and worship in
acknowledging and preserving these blessings. It underscores reliance on Allah
for security and sustenance, urging gratitude through acts of worship and
devotion. Gratefulness is portrayed as essential for the perpetuation and
augmentation of Allah’s favors, as highlighted in the Quranic teachings
1.
The Blessings of Quraysh Are From Allah (SWT): Allah
(SWT) reminded Quraysh of His favour and blessings upon them. He secured and
fed them out of hunger. They should keep in mind their security, food, and all
their worldly affairs are in the hands of Allah Almighty. They shouldn’t fear
anyone other than Allah (SWT). 2. Praise
Allah (SWT) For His Blessings By Performing Worship: Allah (SWT) taught
Quraysh in this Surah that their response to all His blessings should be by
gratefulness, praise, and worship. Likewise,
a Muslim should be aware of all Allah’s blessings. He should respond to Allah’s
favours and blessings by praising Allah (SWT), worshipping Him, and performing
good deeds for the sake of Allah (SWT).
3.
The Permanence and Increase of Allah’s Blessings would be by ‘Shukr:’ The
permanence and increase in rizq require persistence of shukr (gratefulness).
Allah (SWT) said in the Quran: “If you are grateful, I will surely increase you
[in favour]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.” (Quran 14:7)
